Believe. Belong. Become.

Meet the Governors

Hillsborough Primary School is part of INOVA Multi-Academy Trust. The Trust Board is responsible for all of the schools within the Trust and determines the mission, vision and Trust improvement strategy. Local context and community links are provided by Local Governing Boards.

Our Local Governing Board consists of representatives from staff, parents/carers and the wider community. It provides support and challenge to senior leaders at the school, whilst reviewing and monitoring areas for which it has delegated responsibility from the Trust Board. These include:

  • Ensuring that the voice of all stakeholders is heard and taken into account in the work of the Trust and the school.
  • Ensuring that we meet the needs of our community through effective engagement.
  • Ensuring that the experience and welfare of our pupils, including their curriculum, is well-matched to the needs of our community.
  • Challenging the school to ensure deployment of financial resource best fits the needs of the whole school.

Further information about the Trust governance structure and the role of the Local Governing Board is available on the Trust website:

Catherine Jewkes - Chair

Catherine has been involved in school governance since 2019 and became the chair of governors for Hillsborough Primary School in 2022.

She has worked in education for over 10 years, having started as a primary school teacher and then moving into leadership roles within local authority SEND services. She now works as an educational editor, which involves working with a wide range of different schools and advisors and keeping up to date with changes and developments in education.

Catherine is keen to bring this experience to her role and is passionate about working with the school to support and improve outcomes.

Mark Bennett - Vice Chair

Mark is a Director at FindAUniversity, a Sheffield-based company supporting universities with recruitment and offering information, advice and guidance to prospective students. His interests and expertise are in higher education policy, digital content, data analysis and marketing and communications.

Mark first came to Sheffield to complete a PhD in English Literature and has additional experience teaching and lecturing at various universities.

Outside of work Mark enjoys running, cycling and watching Sheffield Wednesday. He and his family have lived locally since 2012 and have one child at Hillsborough Primary School. Mark was partly inspired to become a governor when watching the school and its teachers support their pupils through Covid and he is keen to help Hillsborough continue to succeed.

Jonathan Legon - Co-opted Governor

My name is Jonathan Legon and have just joined the governing body of the school as a co-opted governor. I was a teacher for 25 years; 6 of which were in a Sheffield primary school, the rest in various schools in Hackney, East London. I have been retired for 4 years now. Being aware that there were a number of vacancies for governors in Sheffield, when I was told there was a vacant post in Hillsborough primary school, just minutes from my house, I applied for the role. I hope that my experience in teaching will be of value to the school and have a positive impact on the school in the future.

I have also started to do voluntary work at the Northern General, I am a keen runner, enjoy gardening and have recently also taken up photography.

Jill Smith - Parent Governor

I have been a parent governor for 2 years. My main motivation for becoming a parent governor was based on my child attending Hillsborough school. In addition I have a long history with the school as I also attended as a child. We live locally and I am aware of the community ties to the school. As a parent, I care deeply about creating a school environment where every child feels safe, supported and has the opportunity to achieve their full potential in whatever that is.

I believe our school should be the first choice for families in the community, and I want to play a part in making that happen. I bring experience from my professional background in procurement, which means I understand how to make the most of resources and ensure value for money. I’d like to use these skills to help the school invest wisely in things that really make a difference for pupils.

Most of all, I’m committed to listening to parents, working with staff, and supporting the school in any way I can so that our children have the best possible start in life. I’m approachable and always happy to hear ideas, and I believe strongly in teamwork and involving the wider community to make our school the best it can be.

Jan Micallef - Community Governor

Hello. My Name is Jan and I am one of the co-opted community governors here at Hillsborough Primary School.  I live in Birley Carr, which is very local to this lovely school.

I work for the NHS, with a background in training & education, clinical effectiveness and quality improvement.  In my spare time you will find me either on the gym floor, the ballroom dance floor or volunteering as a Guiding leader for a neighbouring Brownie group.

I have volunteered in this governor’s role for nearly two years now and feel privileged to be able to see first hand the excellent work that Nicola and her team due for their pupils.  There is a warmth and openness that is genuine and as a governor, we are very much a part of.

Nothando Moyo - Co-opt Governor

My name is Nothando Vuyiso Moyo, and I am delighted to serve as a Community Governor for Hillsborough Primary School.

As a mother of one and a creative professional, I am incredibly passionate about the well-being and development of all children. I firmly believe that a strong link between the school and the wider community is essential for creating the best possible learning environment.

My role as a Community Governor involves acting as a bridge, ensuring that the needs and perspectives of the local community are heard and considered in the school's decision-making. I'm committed to doing my bit to help and to using my passion for children and my creative skills to support the school in its mission to nurture and inspire every student at Hillsborough Primary School.

Kate Buxton - Staff Governor

Kate Buxton and I am a class teacher and Staff Governor at Hillsborough Primary School. Since joining the school in 2018, I have taught in FS2 and Year 1. I am currently the Science Lead across school and am working towards achieving my National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership (NPQSL).
